If you’re not familiar with Gary Vee’s $1.80 strategy, then here’s a brief overview of it: go on Instagram (or Twitter and LinkedIn), find nine different hashtags that you have an interest in, and comment on ten posts from those nine hashtags. 90 comments equal two cents for each comment. 90 x .02 = $1.80.

You may be thinking that this sounds relatively simple. I’m here to tell you that it is not simple in the slightest. Finding 90 different posts to comment on takes a lot of work and humility as Gary likes to say.

Commenting “nice, cool, fff? (follow for follow)” does not get the job done. You have to study the copy of the post and comment something relevant to the picture, video, or caption.

Check out an example for the $1.80 strategy on Instagram below:

This right here is a good example of how to approach this strategy. Leaving a genuine comment will greatly increase the chances of the other person engaging with you. Who knows, maybe they will even give you a follow on Instagram and be one of your top followers.

Imagine this

Let’s say you’re new to Instagram. You just created your account, and have a passion for baking.

With your passion for baking in mind, you decide you want to base your Instagram content around everything baking related.

You love baking muffins, so your first post is a picture of your favorite muffins. Once you have a few posts under your belt, you decide to give the $1.80 strategy a try.

Of course, you start out with the hashtag “baking.” Under that hashtag, you find ten posts to leave a comment on. After 25 minutes of doing that, you move on to the next hashtag which is “muffins.” You take another 25 minutes and leave ten comments.

You’re starting to get the hang of this whole $1.80 thing. You enjoy it, you enjoy the aspect of engaging with like-minded people.

After day one, you left a total of 90 genuine comments. You gained six legitimate followers for one day’s worth of work. You’re looking forward to day two.
